Megumi Sakakibara baby dress
May 7, 2014

This was written by An from StraightGrain for the Miss Matatabi Makers series.

Hi there Miss Matatabi readers! I can hardly believe this is already my third post as a Miss Matatabi Maker. Today I’m sharing a similar dress to last month’s, but in a baby version, in a different fabric (of course), and with different sleeves.

A baby dress means that I have to introduce you to a new model in the Miss Matatabi Makers series: little Ava. She was born just one day before last week’s model, Cherie’s adorable Kaya.
This photoshoot was a bit special, as it is the first one where Ava is sitting up straight. She finally found her balance.
In case you’re wondering why I didn’t comb her hair: I did, actually. But her curls are simply impossible to tame, and for some reason also always ridiculously asymmetrical.

As I explained, the pattern of this dress is not entirely new. However, as I’m experimenting with ideas for a next pattern, I wanted to give faux cap sleeves a try this time. They sew up so quickly.

But more importantly: let’s discuss the fabric! I picked a gorgeous, finely woven fabric designed by Megumi Sakakibara for Kei Fabric.  I actually picked it because I knew that big sister Norah would love it, but then I decided I really wanted to make something for Ava this time, and I knew the fabric would match well with her blue eyes.

My hunch that Norah would like this fabric was right: she has been nagging my ears off for a dress in the same fabric. I see a light and simple sundress in her future.

In a nutshell, this is a really great fabric: fine but not sheer, and girly but not in a stereotypical way.

See you next month!

Hi Abby, This dress was self-drafted by An. Fingers crossed it is a pattern she will release in the future 🙂

This dress, fabric and Ava are all gorgeous! I love how big her cheeks are getting. With curls I have the same problem! All of my curls want to jump off my head to the right.
