Classic Tinny dress
September 10, 2015

This was written by An from StraightGrain for the Miss Matatabi Makers series.

Hi everyone! I hope you’ve been enjoying a great Summer. I’m joining you here today with some Winter sewing, even though a pair of bright yellow sandals may suggest otherwise.

A few years ago, I launched the Tinny pattern, a vintage style dress with several skirt, sleeve, and collar options, for girls between 1 and 6. A few months ago, I took it offline so that I could update it. The new version, which is set to launch in a few weeks, will have plenty more options, more sizes (up to 12y) and a few interesting technical features. I took this month’s Miss Matatabi Makers post as an opportunity to test a few options.

This dress features the butterfly collar, the gathered skirt, and one new option: the puff sleeves. The puff sleeves have a little pleat at the hem, which I decorated with a tiny satin bow.

But much more interesting than the pattern, is the fabric I used. I fell in love with this deep blue crepe as soon as I spotted it in Frances’ shop, but I was also a bit apprehensive to work with it. I associated crepe with qualities like very thin, stretchy, and therefore difficult to work with. Frances convinced me to give it a try anyway, and shipped some navy blue lawn with it just in case.

And I’m so happy that Frances sent the crepe. This fabric is a bit heavier than the crepes I’m used to petting in my local fabric store, and this made it just as easy to work with as a simple quilting cotton. The lawn is great quality too, and came in handy to line the bodice.

Those who follow my blog may be a bit surprised about the classic style of the dress. It’s a bit different from the happy colorful stuff I normally make indeed. Well, this dress fulfills a long-time dream of my daughter: to have a dress like the one the main character is wearing in one of her favorite books, “Tiny gets a calendar“. While both dresses are not identical, she loves her new dress! Now that she has the dress, I bet she’ll start nagging for some cool white ankle boots 😉

This really is such a wonderful resource that youre offering and you give it away for free. I adore seeing internet sites that understand the worth of offering a top quality useful resource for free. It?s the outdated what goes around comes around routine.

Have you ever ever thought about adding just a little bit more than simply your thoughts? I mean, what you say is important and everything. But its received no punch, no pop! Possibly in the event you added a pic or two, a video? You can have such a more highly effective blog in the event you let people SEE what youre speaking about instead of just studying it. Anyway, in my language, there are not a lot good supply like this.

I had this website saved some time previously but my laptop crashed. I have since gotten a new one and it took me a while to locate this! I also in fact like the theme though.

Gorgeous! And this is Martine from the French story books! I had them all when I was a kid.

Hi Suzy, thanks! The crepe is a bit heavier than the crepe I have seen so far, and that makes it very easy to sew with. Thinner crepe stretches more, so it’s harder to handle. While this navy crepe is not very thin, it’s still very suitable for a top I think.

Thanks Nicole! And you could definitely have that book indeed. It’s a Belgian series, originally written in French as ‘Martine’, and then translated to a number of languages, including Dutch (‘Tiny’). The old books are so inspirational as far as garments are concerned!

Absolutely beautiful dress and in my favourite dark navy. I’m very interested in how the crepe handles.Would it work as a loose T kind of top for an adult, do you think?

Gorgeous! I would not have taken a second look at the crepe fabric, but this makes me think again. I had to look up what it (crepe) is! It looks like it holds its shape well.
Also, we have that book!! In French (in Canada)… I think it is called Martine et les quatre saisons or something.
